plainly see how the Lord’s footstool is rightly worshiped. Not only do we commit no sin in worshipping it; we should sin if we did not. However, is it the flesh that gives life? No, for the Lord himself, after speaking of this very earth, declared, It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is of no avail (Jn 6:64). When you bow down to the earth somewhere, and prostrate yourself upon it, you must not look at the earth, but at the Holy One whom you are worshipping, whose footstool is the earth.
